Umeme's mandate is to improve the quality of the electricity distribution network, thereby ensuring stable and reliable power supply to our customers. Due to the fact that we inherited an aged network which for a long time had little investment and only limited maintenance, there is the need for a national refurbishment programme of the entire network, combined with a planned operation and maintenance programme. Therefore, in order to achieve its identified business objectives, Umeme is focusing its attention on a number of key areas of activity:
- improving the safety of the network and adherence to safety procedures
- reducing the network system losses and power theft in order to deliver improved quality of supply
- reducing the theft of copper wire, transformers and feeder pillars, which not only causes danger to the public, but also inconveniences the customer and affects the economy due to lost production time
- ensuring the safety of the network and minimizing public fatalities and injuries
- improving the level of customer service and satisfaction
- establishing a well functioning call centre as a one-stop-centre for customer enquiries and complaints, thereby ensuring co-ordinated responses
- improving our response time when customers report a fault or lack of power to our call centre
- improving customer care and service at our various walk-in centres and district offices
- improving on meter reading, accuracy of billing and the timeous delivery of customer bills
