Heating water using electrical appliances
- Avoid using water heaters for long hours. Ensure they are well insulated and if possible, fit a time switch in the water heater.
- Boil only the water you need to avoid wastage of power
- Use a jug/kettle with an automatic switch
- Take a shower instead of a bath, you use less water and therefore less energy to heat it
Ironing/pressing clothes with a flat iron
- Do not leave clothes to dry for too long as they will require more power to press them
- Iron clothes at once. Avoid intermittent ironing as it leads to wastage of power.
Refrigeration/Air condition
- Ensure that fridges, deep freezers are properly closed to avoid heat loss to the surroundings; if possible, use a fridge thermometer.
- Food should be left to cool before it is put in the fridge
- If you feel hot within a room, try to remove warm clothes like sweaters instead of rushing to turn on the thermostat or air conditioner
Lighting in homes and external surroundings
- Use energy saving bulbs of 5-40 W and fluorescent tubes instead of 75 W or 100W bulbs. Use of lower wattage bulbs is recommended because they consume less power.
- Switch off lights which are not required including security lights, where possible.
- Keep internal doors closed wherever possible to avoid heat loss
- Always draw the curtains at night to prevent the valuable heat getting out
- Always remember to switch off lights when you leave a room empty Cooking using electricity
- When water has boiled on a cooker, keeping the switches at maximum position only wastes energy; turn the switch down to keep the water boiling.
- Boil the water for cooking vegetables in a kettle rather than in the pan on the cooker and carefully transfer the water into the pan when it is boiled.
- Ensure that the sizes of your cooking pans match the sizes of your cooker plates
- Cover with a lid all your cooking pots General use of electrical/electronic appliances
- Upon turning off household electronic or electrical appliances such as music system, TV, ensure that the appliances in question are off at the set or at the main. They use electrical energy when left on standby.
- New appliances are more energy efficient than older models. This is mainly due to new energy efficient technology incorporated in the devices/appliances.
